Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

Symptoms: 

PID is an infection that occurs in the female reproductive organs. This condition is often caused by some STD's like gonorrhea. However PID can also be caused by other infections that are not sexually transmitted. Women who have PID face difficulties in conceiving.

  • Severe pain in the lower abdomenal region
  • Fever and headache
  • Unusual vaginal discharge
  • Bad odor from the vagina 
  • Pain and/or bleeding when you have sex
  • Burning sensation when you urinate
  • Bleeding between periods
Tests to diagnose: 
  • Pelvic examinaton : A test wherein the doctor will examine the pelvic region for the signs and symptoms listed above
  • Analysis of the vaginal discharge and the cervical cultures 
  • Urine tests
  • Pelvic ultrasound
  • Laparoscopy
Treatment: 
  • Antibiotics/intravenous antibiotics
  • Treatment for your partner
  • Temporary abstinence
  • Surgery in some severe cases
