Abortion

Symptoms: 

The symptoms include heavy bleeding with clots (more than 2 pads per hour for more than 2 hours), pain or discomfort not relieved by medicines, fever, vomiting for more than 4 to 6 hours, foul smelling vaginal discharge.

Tests to diagnose: 

It can be diagnosed through thorough clinical examination with past history of medication and disease, routine blood investigations, ultrasound pelvis scan and by assessing the maturity of pregnancy.

Treatment: 

The type of abortion procedures you may have depends on how many weeks pregnant you are and if you would like to be awake or asleep.

Medical abortion (The abortion pill) : Involves taking medicines to end the pregnancy (up to nine weeks of pregnancy)

Surgical abortion : Involves a minor operation either awake or asleep, Vacuum aspiration or suction termination (from 7-15 weeks of pregnancy)

Surgical dilation and evacuation (from 15 weeks of pregnancy) : Cervix will be gently stretched and dilated and forceps and a suction tube will be used to remove the foetus

Late abortion (20-24 weeks)
