The symptoms include: 

  • Dry, brittle hair or hair loss in patches
  • Severe itching
  • Swelling of the skin
  • Patchy hair loss
  • Red-ringed patch of small blisters or scaly skin
  • Blisters and pus-filled sores may form around the rings
Tests to diagnose: 

Your doctor might be able to diagnose ringworm simply by looking at it. If the diagnosis isn't clear-cut, he or she may want to take some skin scrapings from the affected area so they can be examined under a microscope.


Antifungal medication is used to treat ringworm.The medications most commonly prescribed include griseofulvin (Grifulvin V, Gris-Peg) Itraconazole and terbinafine (Lamisil).
