Zollinger-Ellision Syndrome

Tests to diagnose: 

Tests include:

  • Abdominal CT scan
  • Calcium infusion test
  • Endoscopic ultrasound
  • Exploratory surgery
  • Gastrin blood level
  • Octreotide scan
  • Secretin stimulation test
Treatment: 

Drugs called proton pump inhibitors (omeprazole, lansoprazole, and others) are now the first choice for treating this condition. Doctors may also prescribe medications known as H2-blockers, such as cimetidine (Tagamet), famotidine (Pepcid), and ranitidine (Zantac). Using chemotherapy to try to slow tumor growth and liver transplant are other treatment options.
