Meningitis

Symptoms: 

The symptoms include:

  • Behavioural changes
  • Bulging fontanelle (infants)
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Diarrhoea
  • Fever
  • Irritability
  • Listless, less responsive
  • Loss of appetite, refusing food (infants)
  • Muscle, leg or joint pain
  • Pale or blotchy skin
  • Rapid breathing
  • Seizures, fits or convulsions
  • Severe headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Vomiting
Tests to diagnose: 

The tests include:

  • Blood cultures
  • Imaging:  X-rays and computerized tomography (CT) scans
  • Spinal tap (lumbar puncture)
Treatment: 

Antibiotics can be given as a precautionary measure.
